Diazepam: For alcohol withdrawal
First, what is Diazepam?
Diazepam which is sold under the brand name Valium belongs to a medicinal group called Benzodiazepines. This collection of drugs prominently comes under the category of drugs that act as tranquilizers, hence producing a calming effect in the body. Also, Diazepam is more inclined towards recantation of alcohol.
Now, let us see why is Diazepam prescribed on the first hand and how does it work towards putting an end to alcohol.
We all know that withdrawal is such a hyped topic around why it is considered to be so risky and dodgy. If you are someone who drinks a lot for a certain period of time, your central nervous system has been adjusted accordingly and has adapted to that lifestyle. Now, when you suddenly stop consuming alcohol your brain gets baffled, which then causes withdrawal.
The symptoms usually depend on how often you drank and how much. Commonly, your body starts to perspire, it starts shaking, you witness hallucinations. You feel more anxious, the heart rate is faster than normal also you may start to suffer from insomnia.
Now, diazepam helps to reduce the effects of withdrawal. A human body consists of a chemical compound which is the neurotransmitter that is responsible for neurotransmission. Simply put, it operates as a chemical messenger between one neuron to the target neuron. We have a more or less 100 neurotransmitters in our body, and one of the major neurotransmitters is gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter, in the central nervous system of a mammal. In humans, GABA lessens the stimulation and excitability.
Also, it is ascertained that activation of the GABA receptors favors sleep. This is exactly what Diazepam does, it activates the release of GABA receptor hence leads to treating insomnia by erranding sleep. Also, Diazepam is obviously considered to be a calming agent as it belongs to the Benzodiazepine family, because of this it helps to reduce the shakiness in the body and hence the anxiety. This readily restrains the hallucination. Oral forms of Diazepam are recommended for short-term treatment of severe anxiety along with insomnia. Long-term use is not advised since Diazepam is said to cause dependability.
But as Diazepam can affirmatively curb all the symptoms of a withdrawal it is an upbeat option prescribed by the doctors.
